Standardization

IFSTTAR's involvement in standardization bodies

IFSTTAR experts are asked to participate in many french (AFNOR), european (CEN) and international (ISO) standardization committees. They intervene :

 

• on behalf of a ministry or

• as part of a scientific community.

 

45 experts from the Institute are involved in standardization committee group. They follow up on about 40 French Commissions, 30 European Technical Committees and 10 International Technical Committees, with, as needed, animation or presidency functions.

  

  • ISO (International Organization for Standardization) is the global standardization body. It has 164 member countries, about 250 technical committees and 2700 working groups for about 22 000 standards.
  • CEN (European Committee for Standardization) is the European standardization body. It has 34 member countries, 400 technical committees, 1600 working groups for about 15000 standards.
  • AFNOR ( French national organization for standardization and its International Organization for Standardization member body) is the French standardization body that is overseen by the Ministry for Industry. It has a membership of approximately 3000 firms and oversees the central standardization system which has 22 sector-specific standardization bureaux and 20,000 experts. AFNOR represents France on CEN  and ISO .
  • Amongst the sectoral standardization offices, IFSTTAR is more particularly active in the BNTRA, the standardization bureau for transport, roads and their design .
