Bassil A, Wang X, Chapeleau X, Niederleithinger E, Abraham O and Leduc D (2019), "Distributed Fiber Optics Sensing and Coda Wave Interferometry Techniques for Damage Monitoring in Concrete Structures", Sensors. Vol. 19(2)
Abstract: The assessment of Coda Wave Interferometry (CWI) and Distributed Fiber Optics Sensing (DFOS) techniques for the detection of damages in a laboratory size reinforced concrete beam is presented in this paper. The sensitivity of these two novel techniques to micro cracks is discussed and compared to standard traditional sensors. Moreover, the capacity of a DFOS technique to localize cracks and quantify crack openings is also assessed. The results show that the implementation of CWI and DFOS techniques allow the detection of early subtle changes in reinforced concrete structures until crack formation. With their ability to quantify the crack opening, following early detection and localization, DFOS techniques can achieve more effective monitoring of reinforced concrete structures. Contrary to discrete sensors, CWI and DFOS techniques cover larger areas and thus provide more efficient infrastructures asset management and maintenance operations throughout the lifetime of the structure.

Abstract: This paper presents a zero-dimensional (0D) model of hydride tank. The model aims to study the dynamic heat and mass transfers during desorption process in order to investigate the thermal-fluidic behaviors of this hydride tank. This proposed model has been validated experimentally thanks to a tailor-made developed test bench. This test bench allows the hydride characterization at tank scale and also the energetic characterization. The simulation results of the heat exchanges and mass transfer in and between the coupled reaction bed, show good agreement with the experimental ones. It is shown that the heat produced by a Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cell (PEMFC) (estimated starting from an electrical model) is enough to heat the metal alloy (FeTi) and therefore release the hydrogen with a sufficient mass flow rate to supply the PEMFC. Furthermore, the obtained results highlight the importance of the developed model for energy management of the coupling of fuel cell and hydride tank system.

Cordone R and Hosteins P (2019), "A bi-objective model for the single-machine scheduling problem with rejection cost and total tardiness minimization", Computers & Operations Research. Vol. 102, pp. 130 - 140.
Abstract: We study the problem of scheduling jobs on a single machine with a rejection possibility, concurrently minimizing the total tardiness of the scheduled jobs and the total cost of the rejected ones. The model we consider is fully bi-objective, i.e. its aim is to enumerate the Pareto front. We tackle the problem both with and without the presence of hard deadlines. For the case without deadlines, we provide a pseudo-polynomial time algorithm, based on the dynamic program of Steiner and Zhang (2011), thereby proving that the problem is weakly NP-hard. For the case with deadlines, we propose a branch-and-bound algorithm and prove its efficiency by comparing it to an ε-constrained approach on benchmark instances based on those proposed in the literature on similar problems.

Hamadi N, Imine H, Ameddah D-e and Chari A (2019), "Tires-road forces estimation: Using sliding mode and triangular observer", IFAC Journal of Systems and Control. , pp. 100032.
Abstract: This paper presents two kinds of observers: first order sliding mode and triangular form, applied to a dynamic model of a vehicle in order to estimate the dynamic state of the vehicle and contact forces. The vehicle model is based on Lagrange formalism, which takes into account the evolution of each subsystem under normal operation when there is a possible presence of defects. Within this work, the obtained results are represented with an illustration of the absolute errors between the two methods compared to the simulation results.

Vol. 145(1), pp. 04018225. American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE).
Abstract: This paper deals with the experimental determination of ductility of ultra-high-performance fiber-reinforced concrete (UHPFRC) columns with longitudinal passive reinforcement, tested under combined axial and alternate flexural load. The influence of axial load has been studied, as well as the presence or not of a reduced shear reinforcement. One companion column made of ordinary concrete and with a high shear reinforcement ratio has also been tested for comparison. The ductility has been assessed with energy dissipation and ductility coefficient calculations. In addition, the maximum bending moment has been compared with theoretical calculation, using the material characteristics determined from characterization tests. The paper concludes that UHPFRC columns with a longitudinal reinforcement which have not been specifically designed for seismic resistance do display a ductility coefficient higher than 2 and a noticeable ability to protect the rebars from buckling, but have a rather high decrease of bending moment under the succession of series of alternate flexural load cycles.

Abstract: ABSTRACTPreserving older pedestrians’ navigation skills in urban environments is a challenge for maintaining their quality of life. However, existing aids do not take into account older people’s perceptual and cognitive declines nor their user experience, and they call upon sensory modalities that are already used during walking. The present study was aimed at comparing different guidance instructions using visual, auditory, and haptic feedback in order to identify the most efficient and best accepted one(s). Sixteen middle-age (non-retired) adults, 21 younger-old (young-retired) adults, and 21 older-old (old-retired) adults performed a navigation task in a virtual environment. The task was performed with visual feedback (directional arrows superimposed on the visual scenes), auditory feedback (sounds in the left/right ear), haptic feedback (vibrotactile information delivered by a wristband), combinations of different types of sensory feedback, or a paper map. The results showed that older people benefited from the sensory guidance instructions, as compared to the paper map. Visual and auditory feedbacks were associated with better performance and user experience than haptic feedback or the paper map, and the benefits were the greatest among the older-old participants, even though the paper-map familiarity was appreciated. Several recommendations for designing pedestrian navigation aids are proposed.

Nguyen KTP, Beugin J, Berbineau M and Marais J (2019), "Application of fuzzy theory for identifying the required availability of an autonomous localization unit in European Train Control System", Journal of Intelligent Transportation Systems. Vol. 0(0), pp. 1-17. Taylor & Francis.
Abstract: AbstractAccording to the evolution tendency of the control decision process from a trackside to a train-borne system, various autonomous localization units for railway vehicles were developed. As recommended in railway standards, the design process of each system, here the autonomous localization units (LU), follows the V-model whose first step is to define its availability requirement in order to satisfy the global ETCS system requirements. The classical approach for assigning the subsystem availability is based on the assumption that failure parameters of other units are precisely known. This assumption is too restricted in reality due to the lack of information. In this paper, we propose a new approach that allows taking into account uncertainties in the dependability parameters of the ETCS components for identifying the upper threshold of the LU unavailability to reach ETCS availability requirements. Using fuzzy fault trees, the fuzzy unavailability of the ETCS without the autonomous LU is evaluated. Then, based on its membership function, we assess the satisfaction rate that an advanced ETCS with the autonomous LU can satisfy the ETCS availability target.

Raman V, Drissi-Habti M, Limje P and Khadour A (2019), "Finer SHM-Coverage of Inter-Plies and Bondings in Smart Composite by Dual Sinusoidal Placed Distributed Optical Fiber Sensors", Sensors. Vol. 19(3)
Abstract: Designing of new generation offshore wind turbine blades is a great challenge as size of blades are getting larger (typically larger than 100 m). Structural Health Monitoring (SHM), which uses embedded Fiber Optics Sensors (FOSs), is incorporated in critical stressed zones such as trailing edges and spar webs. When FOS are embedded within composites, a ‘penny shape’ region of resin concentration is formed around the section of FOS. The size of so-formed defects are depending on diameter of the FOS. Penny shape defects depend of FOS diameter. Consequently, care must be given to embed in composites reliable sensors that are as small as possible. The way of FOS placement within composite plies is the second critical issue. Previous research work done in this field (1) investigated multiple linear FOS and sinusoidal FOS placement, as well. The authors pointed out that better structural coverage of the critical zones needs some new concepts. Therefore, further advancement is proposed in the current article with novel FOS placement (anti-phasic sinusoidal FOS placement), so as to cover more critical area and sense multi-directional strains, when the wind blade is in-use. The efficiency of the new positioning is proven by numerical and experimental study.

Laffitte P, Wang Y, Sodoyer D and Girin L (2019), "Assessing the performances of different neural network architectures for the detection of screams and shouts in public transportation.", Expert Systems with Applications. Vol. 117, pp. 29 - 41.
Abstract: Highlights • Models including temporal decoding deal better with the temporal information. • Vocal sounds are those which benefit the most from temporal information. • Decomposing the acoustic environment helps classifying shouts and speech sounds. • Real-world cases impose further constraint which affects the system's performance. Abstract As intelligent transportation systems are becoming more and more prevalent, the relevance of automatic surveillance systems grows larger. While such systems rely heavily on video signals, other types of signals can be used as well to monitor the security of passengers. The present article proposes an audio-based intelligent system for surveillance in public transportation, investigating the use of some state-of-the-art artificial intelligence methods for the automatic detection of screams and shouts. We present test results produced on a database of sounds occurring in subway trains in real working conditions, by classifying sounds into screams, sh

Zeddini B and Zargayouna M (2019), "Dispatching Strategies for Dynamic Vehicle Routing Problems", In Agents and Multi-Agent Systems: Technologies and Applications 2018. Cham , pp. 87-96. Springer International Publishing.
Abstract: Online vehicle routing problems are highly complex problems for which several techniques have been successfully proposed. Traditionally, the solutions concern the optimization of conventional criteria (such as the number of mobilized vehicles and the total traveled distance). However, in online systems, the optimization of the response time to the connected users becomes at least as important as the optimization of the traditional criteria. Multi-agent systems and greedy insertion heuristics are the most promising approaches to optimize this criteria. To this end, we propose a multi-agent system and we focus on the clients dispatching strategy. The strategy decides which agents perform the computation to answer the clients requests. We propose three dispatching strategies: centralized, decentralized and hybrid. We compare these three approaches based on their response time to online users. We consider two experiments configuration, a centralized configuration and a network configuration. The results show the superiority of the centralized approach in the first configuration and the superiority of the hybrid approach in the second configuration.
