    My research field is the study of the mechanisms involved in the detection of vulnerable road users (motorcyclists, pedestrians and cyclists) by motorists, mainly in urban areas. Specifically, I am interested in the implications of motorists’ visuo-attentional abilities (particularly their useful visual field), the impact of their knowledge (cognitive conspicuity) and their emotions on their performance in detection tasks performed during driving. I also investigate the impact of physical characteristics of vulnerable road users on their visibility (sensory conspicuity).
    Most of these studies are carried on using a fixed-base car driving simulator which allows to immerse participants in some critical driving situations and to control at the same time major variables (such as the transport infrastructure, the traffic, the vulnerable road users’ behaviour …). The ocular strategy and the state of motorists (low state of alertness and emotions) are monitored while driving using an eye tracker and/or a physiological data logger.
    Several methods such as motorists’ training or awareness, and technical systems for vulnerable road users are experimented in order to improve their safety level in their interactions with car drivers.
