Abstract

Objectives of the thesis
The research aims to characterize PAHs in bituminous materials and their emissions to workers in the field of construction and road maintenance. The objective is to study, at the laboratory scale, the relationships that may exist between the composition of bituminous materials and the impact of implementation processes on the distribution and quantification of PAHs in the solid matrix. bitumen as well as within the emissions generated.
The proposed project, which brings together the CEREMA-based DIMA Research Project Team based in Aix-en-Provence and the Materials Laboratory for Transport Infrastructures of IFSTTAR in Nantes, aims to:
- broaden the analytical characterization of road products by searching directly into the bituminous matrix extracted from the studied materials, a certain number of new organic tracers in addition to the usual organic compounds of reference. The number of new tracers that can be identified and quantified will depend on the sensitivity of the High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) available at CEREMA.
- continue the development of works initiated in the research project funded by ANSES by studying the smoke of a larger panel of bituminous binders (type of bitumen, presence of tar in the aggregates),
- identify the parameters influencing the overall content and relative distribution of PAHs as a function of their molecular mass,
- relate the composition of solid materials with their potential emissivity in the air according to the coating processes of real granular mixtures implemented on pavements (manufacturing temperature, additive for warm mixes, regenerating agent for recycling ...).

Skills
The main disciplines covered by the (a) candidate are the physico-chemistry of materials and analytical chemistry. Experience in the field of analytical chemistry by HPLC (UV or Fluo) and / or GC / MS techniques would be essential. Enhancement of the work through the publication of scientific articles and participation in at least one international conference is expected.

Supervision will be provided by A. Pévère (CR CEREMA) and V. Gaudefroy (DR IFSTTAR). During the thesis work, the doctoral student will leave his / her time between the Chemistry Laboratory of CEREMA in Aix-en-Provence and the Materials Laboratory for Transport Infrastructures of IFSTTAR based in Nantes.

Keywords : Bituminous materials, aromatic polycyclic compounds, circular economy.
